This article intends to highlight the sport of basketball by providing inspiration to all children or adults that are interested in basketball. I researched the level of interest that students have in basketball and conducted a survey that further explored the level of basketball knowledge of a GAA student . Furthermore, I interviewed a teacher from GAA who is also a basketball coach. The survey looked into a specific basketball player who is incredibly influential, named Luka Dončić. He is a fairly unknown player, but this does not take away the fact that he is undoubtedly one of the greatest, if not the best, player in the world as of now. The survey had informed the students of him and his capabilities so they had a better understanding of who he was. Four of the students were female and six male. Out of all of the students only 30% were interested in basketball in the beginning of the survey but after the survey 70% were interested. This shows a 40% boost in interest which showed that basketball has many more people to inspire.
In hopes of inspiring students to participate in or watch the sport more, I conducted an interview with Mr.Carlos Cotman who is a science teacher at GAA and the school’s basketball coach as well. He has been interested in basketball since the age of 4 years old. His older brother who is 8 years older than him had played basketball with his friends and it intrigued Mr.Cotman. When asked what the biggest impact basketball provided for him, he stated “the ability to work with a group of people, teamwork, go through trials, tribulations, adversity, and to overcome our limitations to be better.” All of these challenges and attributions have built his character and are definitely the perfect examples of the benefits of basketball seeing that he already imprints this idea to his students. This was interesting because when questioned about his advice to aspiring basketball players his advice was to “stay committed every single year, by playing with team sports that build leadership development, teach you to know how to push yourself, and to know how to deal with conflict within group which we could use a lot in the world today.”
Additional research found evidence that basketball is a great way to stay in shape, build experiences, create points of interest, and to shape yourself into the best version of yourself. I will continue to inspire my fellow peers and teachers to follow up on basketball through media as well as through school games or even just outside of school privately. The evidence is clear showing that just an interesting new character in basketball can already attract so many followers. Hopefully my message has been effective and I will see more players join the team next year.
